Users Stopping Slimming Medications Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that people who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People purchasing such treatments should be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically have a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

People who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of appetite.

"It was like a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
